P. R. Davies' book The Damascus Covenant strongly underlines the claim of the Essenes to have originated in Babylon, thus confirming Murphy-O'Connor's hypothesis. This and other studies of CD have obliged the latter to modify his position on the Essene attitude towards the Temple, and have stimulated new insights into the self-understanding of the Teacher of Righteousness and the nature of messianic expectation. | ||
