Riepilogo:Examination of "the role of religion on television and on the lives of viewers" is the research question of Gerbner, et al. This concern is addressed by content analysis of religious television and audience surveys. Our thesis is that the techniques of content analysis and cultural indicators were inadequate for the questions and issues raised. Our critique of the conceptual and methodological limitations of this study rests on sociological explanations of religion and television. We conclude that Religion and Television confirmed previous observations and analysis by Hadden and Swann (1981); Stacey and Shupe (1982); Frankl (1984) to name a few, the new findings added little of significance to answer their research questions. It is noted, however, that the symbolic contribution of this project was to legitimate market research efforts for the sponsors of this enterprise.
