| Σύνοψη: | Why should we see Pascal’s Pensées as materials accumulated for the sake of constructing an Apology for the Christian religion, rather than as a work to be grasped, loved and understood in all its apparent disorder and even incompleteness ? A random distribution of fragments across the space of an empty page, pertaining to parataxis but not at all to syntax, would surely be more in the spirit of the author than the logical sequence in which one seeks to imprison them. What editor would claim to round off the interrupted movement of this incomparable artist ? Quite rightly, F. Kaplan offers us more of a manuductio to accompany us than a numbered classification of pieces presuming to rebuild a structure that has never existed. The Pensées are not by any means archeological vestiges. RésuméPourquoi voir, dans les Pensées de Pascal, les matériaux accumulés en vue de l’édification d’une Apologie de la religion chrétienne, plutôt qu’une œuvre à saisir, à aimer, à comprendre dans son apparent désordre et inachèvement même ? Une distribution aléatoire des fragments dans l’espace du papier blanc, relevant de la parataxe et non point de la syntaxe, retrouverait plus sûrement le souffle de l’auteur que l’enchaînement logique dans lequel on les voudrait enfermer. Quel éditeur prétendrait-il accomplir le geste interrompu de l’incomparable artiste qu’est Pascal ? À juste titre, F. Kaplan nous offre plus une manuductio pour nous accompagner qu’un classement numéroté des pièces en vue de la reconstruction présumée d’un édifice qui n’a jamais existé. Les Pensées ne sont point vestiges archéologiques. |
