If so, the evangelist could be expected to assume knowledge of the liturgy by his fellow believers. By allusion therefore rather than by direct reference he could more vividly teach them the meaning of their liturgical actions. John 2:1-11 is here examined in order to see whether such an assumption gives a richer meaning to the text.
