This article examines some of the attempts which have been offered to solve the exegetical difficulties. Special attention is given to the standpoint which defends the manager's conduct as correct and to the approach which sees this pericope as a recommendation for philanthropy. The various solutions are rejected in favour of an approach suggesting that this parable should be interpreted in the light of 16:9 as an ironical or sarcastic remark.
