Итог: | The long history of research on Paul's style has neglected to a large extent the question of the (semiotic) meaning of the various rhetorical devices used in his letters. Instead of merely listing and classifying the rhetorical devices, an attempt is made in this essay to define their meanings in respect of two relations which they serve to mark, namely the relationship of parts of a text to one another, and of the text to the participants in the communication. Romans 8:31-9 is analysed according to a method of stylistic analysis which takes into account the broader and more inclusive units normally related semantically, as well as the rhetorical features which serve to increase the impact and appeal of these broader units. In determining the meanings of these rhetorical devices, rhetorical principles in Hellenistic times are considered, as well as certain techniques used in modern literary analysis. |
