Beck's cognitive triad, which consists of a negative view of one's self and one's future, and a negative interpretation of one's experiences, provides the framework for understanding Elijah's sense of hopelessness. God's directive response to Elijah is discussed as being consistent with the therapeutic approach advocated by cognitive theory. The use of psychology in biblical studies is addressed as an emerging post-modern approach to interpreting scripture. 1This manuscript is based on a paper presented at the annual meetings of the Society of Biblical Literature (2006) and the Academy of Homiletics (2006).
