Beschreibung
Zusammenfassung:The present paper attempts to look at various criteria to develop taxonomy of the Indians in South Africa. Various classificatory categories have become part of this taxonomy, viz., indentured Indians vs. passenger Indians; South Indian vs. North Indians; Tamils, Telugus, Hindis, and Gujaratis; Hindus, Muslims, Christians, Parsees, and so on. One could multiply this classification in many different ways. And the criteria used are dependent on what one would want to achieve. The criteria include colonial distinctions, culture, language, religion, politics and so on. While all these different classifications are possible, and the criteria being so variant, is it possible to talk about a monistic identity or a pluralistic identity?
