520 |a What is the Bible about? This is the question which Martin Luther answered quite clearly. For him it was clear that there is one main biblical message. This message is the Gospel about Christ and mainly has to be understood not as a written text, but as a proclamation. It is something that happens to the reader, if the biblical text is understood. The centuries before, but especially after Luther showed that there were a lot of messages in the Bible, a lot of messages were also in the history of the interpretation of the biblical text. Is it still possible or useful to try to find one main message? Probably it is not possible, because of the texts themselves, which had developed in different times and indeed were written in different historic situations with different purposes. It is not also possible because of the freedom of the reader, there are and will be different interpretations in different times and also in different parts of one society. It is also necessary to ask this question, even if we would find different answers, in order to know why it is still worth to read the biblical text. Besides it helps to do some critical evalutation of the interpretations and even more so of the acts the interepretation causes, to draw bordelines. Discriminating interpretations should stay outside these borders. So far Luther's understanding is still topical. The meaning of the Bible is, what happens to the reader, an individual or a group, or society. It is the message of God's love to his people, carried through time.
