Descripción
Sumario:The Iberian expansion in Europe and America during the Early Modern period was the setting of a previously unknown circulation of religious knowledge corresponding to an ambition of 'spiritual conquest'. This article aims at showing the spiritual and editorial strategy of a Spanish Carmelite, Jerónimo Gracián de la Madre de Dios (1575-1614) during his stay in the Southern Netherlands. The article examines the spread of devotional books as part of a colonial project and engages with the question of the selection made by the author depending on his readership. Furthermore, it shows how the circulation of the same type of books on both sides of the Atlantic brings together 'inner' religious missions directed against Protestantism in the Southern Netherlands and 'outer' missions in Spanish America. Lastly, the role of the Southern Netherlands in the missionary process is analyzed. (English)
