Resumo: | With the publication of Angelo Brelich's Gli eroi greci in 1958, the cornerstone was set in place for the construction of a science of the history of religions, which was still searching for its own autonomous status in the face of the challenges of irrationalism. The attempt to recover the ideological and methodological assumptions that informed the genesis and writing of this book goes through an analysis of the crisis of the original connection with Károly Kerenyi (from whom Brelich received a refined philological training in Hungary), which was completed during the long period of collaboration with Raffaele Pettazzoni at the Chair of History of Religions at the University of Rome. The solidarity of myth with music and art that was explored by the irrational aesthetic of Kerenyi's evocative prose becomes in Brelich the act of historicizing Hellenic culture by means of analysis of the relationship between myth, literature, and philosophy. The contextualization of the intellectual biography of Brelich in the wider cultural debate of his time thus discloses its fundamental contribution to the crucial issue of the reasons for the variability of the myth. Proceeding, in complete autonomy, next to the structuralist research of Claude Lévi-Strauss, the research undertaken with the Gli eroi greci is to be distinguished from the historicism of Ernesto De Martino due to the development of an original method of philological analysis of the sources, the identification of mythical themes and motifs, and the use of a comparative tool that is constantly close to the data.
