Description
Résumé:The author argues for a religio-historical approach towards the formulation of a "theology" of the Old Testament instead of using an "underlying fundamental idea" (such as covenant) as a "centre", for the Old Testament. Through this approach old Testament theologians will be able to take into consideration not only the religio-historical development of Israel's relationships to neighbouring religions, but also the obvious tendency towards the unity of Old Testament pronouncements right throughout history, which confessed only one God and not a multiplicity of gods. The author concludes: "The apparent answer to these basic questions concerning the peculiarity of the Yahweh faith in relation to neighbouring religions, the common denominator of the Old Testament in spite of its changing history and diverse literature, as well as that which binds it to the New Testament and even to the subsequent history of theology, is the first commandment". The author, furthermore, explains the consequences of this statement.
