Die christlichen Römer prägten das Stadtbild mit Kirchen und Klöstern voller Mosaiken, Fresken, Ikonen und kunstvollen Manuskripten. Die islamischen Osmanen fügten die schönsten Moscheen ihrer Zeit hinzu, die Kunst der Kalligraphie, der Buchmalerei, der Stoff- und Teppichherstellung blühte. Der prachtvolle, umfangreiche Band mit zahllosen Abbildungen stellt dieses Kulturerbe vor, erläutert teilweise detailliert, aber auch dem Laien verständlich, Hintergründe und Zusammenhänge. Ergänzend ein Kapitel über die Kunst der früheren osmanischen Hauptstädte Bursa und Edirne, komplettiert wird der Band mit Bibliographie, Karten, Zeittafel, Register und Glossar.
