Loretz examines the fields of justice and judgment in human and divine spheres within Ancient Near Eastern civilizations, mainly focused on Syria (Ugaritic texts) and Israel (Old Testament). Chapter 1 deals with divine, chapter 2 with the ancestors' judgment upon humans. Chapter 3 contrasts ideology and reality of the concept of the "King of Justice." Further chapters are devoted to philological and historical studies of the Amorite-Canaanite tradition of justice.
