In phenomenological respect this category should not be overlooked so as to do justice to the conduct of someone like Janus Korczak, who, of his own accord and as a sign of his deep solidarity, accompanied orphans entrusted to his care to a concentration camp and to their death. In situations in which a person is deprived of the possibility of achieving a certain purpose he can, all the same, demonstrate his own moral attitude without being obliged to do so according to usual moral standards. Through such conduct he can, in a way transcending his duty, symbolize, on the one hand, his altruistic attitude, on the other hand, his personal ideals. | ||
