Descripción
Sumario:100 years after Albrecht Alt's dissertation on "Israel und Ägypten" (Israel and Egypt, 1909), the present article examines recent insights and new perspectives on this issue. Scholarship has tended to focus primarily on Egyptian texts from the 2nd millennium B.C.E., while the literature from the historical period where "Israel" and "Egypt" existed as autonomous entities was mostly overlooked. Against the backdrop of the recently rediscovered literature from the so-called "Late Period" of Egypt (and especially the Demotic literature) this article argues for a change of paradigm.¶Following Albrecht Alt who in 1909 drew attention to the importance of the first half of the 1st millennium B.C.E., recent scholarship should give particular consideration to Egyptian literature from the 7th century onwards. In this historical period we find in Egypt both a number of older texts as well as new literature such as the "Book of the Temple" or the "Book of Thoth", all of which open the field for new comparative studies on the relationship between Israel and Egypt.
