Description
Summary:The phenomenon of ritual or verbal journeys, which are undertaken by shamans and tribal priests through words only, is quite common among the Tibeto-Burman groups of the Central Himalayas. The paper describes this religious practice as a cultural construction of space and place: the enumeration of place names generates a movement through a landscape full of meanings and memories, and this establishes a mytho-ritual topography, which can be seen as basic grid of orientation in the respective culture. The examination of the various traditions among the Kiranti (Rai and Limbu), the Tamang, Gurung and Magar in the hills of Nepal reveals a number of similarities (especially the meaning of verticality, hill-orientation, north-south axis), but also differences. It also shows that these »imagined landscapes « have an important role in the formation of identity. Thus they have also a political dimension, and sometimes can be subject to historical change.
