Descrição
Resumo:Social conflicts about religious symbols and places have come to the fore in recent years in Europe. The article provides brief historic descriptions of two such conflicts, that of the call of the Muezzin in Duisburg-Laar (Germany) and that of Great Britain's main Hare-Krishna temple, north of London. These conflicts are theoretically contextualized within the sociological concept of the public domain. It becomes apparent that the public domain by no means is non-normative. To the contrary, it is a domain highly disputed and contested. As such conflicts indicate, a reconsideration and renegotiation of the public domain's contents appears necessary, providing forms and means for representing hitherto marginal groups, especially those of migrants, within the public domain.
