Description
Summary:Against the popular viewpoint of religious »individualization« as something that exclusively takes place beyond the major churches, the following article wants to cast a glance on the »wanderer«, a social type increasingly to be found within the ecclesiastical spheres. Following a short summary of some current perspectives on the present religious landscape in Germany this social form of individualized, selfauthorized spirituality makes up the basic issue of the article. »Wanderers« assume a plurality of equivalent spiritual ways that nevertheless altogether lead into a »joint higher reality« and therefore can be explored and combined in an experimental manner. They couple this conviction with a refusal of any effort of ecclesiastical authorities to control their spirituality – »wanderers« see themselves as the sole masters of their religion. With the greatest of ease they combine within their attitude towards the churches a selective use of attractive offers with the rejection of traditional ecclesiastical religiosity, which they consider to be »narrow«, »bullying« and »lifeless«. Workshops and courses constitute the fleeting forms of social associations of this type of late modern spirituality that finds itself between the determination of the modern »pilgrim« and the laissez-fair attitude of the postmodern »flaneur«.
