Riepilogo:In academic literature, particularly in Social Sciences, Muslim minorities in Europe are increasingly described as »diasporas« and/or as communities and groupings of »transnational« nature. Nevertheless, these concepts did not exist in Islamic theological or juridical tradition and thought, and most contemporary Islamic authorities deny their use in current Islam-related contexts. By means of a discourse analysis on the field of »Muslims in Europe«, the author argues that the key role at promoting a »transnational« or »diasporic consciousness « is actually by (mostly non-Muslim) academics and the educated Muslim middle class. Identity constructions or the use of »diaspora« and »transnationalism « as self-perception are mainly advertised by Muslim agents who belong to European academia. Central to the analysis are the works of two Muslim intellectuals who were raised and educated in Europe and are teaching and researching at Arts and Social Science faculties: Tariq Ramadan and Salman Bobby Sayyid.
