Description
Résumé:This article situates Aaron Hughes’s recent work on the study of Islam, and specifically his critique of how much work in the field proceeds, in light of a current set of scholarly papers on normativity in Islamic Studies, in an effort to substantiate his critique of the field. By providing such examples (including the selective and thus self-beneficial way in which so-called engaged scholarship is carried out) the article argues that an approach to the study of religion that aims merely to repeat certain participant claims threatens the model of scholarship others of us have worked so hard to establish as the academic study of religion.
