Итог: | The article relates and expounds a little-known interpretative trajectory, extending from Origen to Thomas Aquinas, that transmits the basic theological content of Ignatius of Antioch’s Letter to the Ephesians 19.1. Part I provides a three-pronged, non-exhaustive exploration of the most important literary and historical contexts of the verse, treating the wider letter, the verse’s Gnostic and Judaic milieu, and its canonical milieu. I argue that this assessment of Ignatius’s text is an indispensable aid in providing a thorough exposition and assessment of the subsequent interpretative trajectory. Part II attends to the trajectory itself, wherein I situate chronologically the texts of Origen, Ambrose, Jerome, and Thomas Aquinas, noting throughout the most significant theological developments in each. Finally, I offer a modest analysis of the strengths and weaknesses of this trajectory of interpretation, emphasizing above all the notable way in which Ignatius’s theology has, in this case, had a significant effect upon later theological tradition. |
