Description
Summary:The city centre as a location for mission has been largely neglected. It demands, alongside the inner-city and rural ministry, to be recognised as having its own special needs, problems and opportunities. A brief historical survey traces the way the city centre has moved from being the heartbeat of the city to decline until, in recent years, in the postmodern city, seen a remarkable revitalisation. This poses a challenge to the churches for mission and ministry. The often but not always withering traditional congregation has to take account of the recent changes. There are also new forms of church that reflect the social patterns. Being in the city centre should also clearly inform the worship of the church. Importantly, being at the hub of modern urban life, the city centre is the place where public theology should actively come into contact with various social, civic and economic structures.
