Riepilogo: | In recent literature John Smyth is thought to be in lineage with Separatist pioneer Robert Browne, two decades earlier. However when considering their ecclesiology, and especially their theology of ministry, huge differences emerge. This article will challenge the present thesis and show how Smyth not only broke away from the Church of England, as did Browne, but also broke away from Puritan theology and developed a more spiritualistic approach to the church gathering, its ministry and the role of Scripture. Browne, on the contrary, never abandoned his Puritan roots and kept a firm emphasis on the special character of church ministry, distinctly called and sent by Christ to serve the church as his messenger. |
