Summary: | Saskia Wendel focuses on the relationship of resilence and vulnerabiltiy by stressing the critical implications of resilience as a discursive and performative practice of embodiment inextricably interwoven with power, especially when issues of gender and social habits are in play. Referring to Foucault's critical notion of Biopower and his constructive idea of enhancing self-technologies, the discourses on resilience has to focus on ideals of what constitutes the successful performance of life. Hence, Wendel also points to problematic aspects in the notion of endurance. In everyday language endurance is often cloaked in the language as sumission, acquiescing and accepting - a result which Wendel of course describes as endangering resilience. Resilience, to the contrary, should be understood as an enhancement of resistance and hope against all odds; within the Christian faith such hope is brought forth especially for those who, in the end, could not cope any longer or whose endurance has even led to their downfall. |
