Description
Summary:The article considers the question of whether marriage can be understood as a vocation, taking its point of departure from Pope Francis’s statement in Amoris laetitia that the choice to enter into marriage should indeed arise out of one’s own vocation. In the first part, the article sets out some difficulties in calling marriage a vocation and defines the issues at stake. To call marriage a vocation is not a new development in recent magisterial teaching. As obvious and unproblematic as it might seem at first, it is difficult to define what a vocation is and more so what kind of vocation marriage would be. If we want to call marriage a vocation, we have to show how marriage as a sacramental existence has its own characteristic mission. The article uses AL to show how marriage can be understood from the perspective of the family to have its own mission ad extra and ad intra and thus be properly understood as a vocation. Pope Francis makes married love central to his thought and from this he draws various missions of the spouses to and with the Church. These missions can be seen as constitutive of the sacramentality of marriage
