| Resumo: | Against the background of the Imperial Cult, Tertullian emphasizes, in his Apologeticum (apol.), the emperor’s majesty (maiestas) and the Christian devotion to it. At the same time, he acknowledges the emperor’s maiestas only as far as it is subordinated to the maiestas of the one God. An analysis of apol. 28-34 illustrates Tertullian’s ingenious use of the word field “maiestas” and of the categorical distinction between God and man and shows how, by those means, he sketches a clear classification of the two maiestates and a specific kind of reverence for the emperor. Vor dem Hintergrund des Kaiserkultes betont Tertullian im Apologeticum (apol.) die Größe, maiestas, des Kaisers sowie die Ergebenheit der Christen vor ihr. Zugleich lässt der Karthager die maiestas des Herrschers nur in angemessener Zuordnung zur übergeordneten maiestas des einen Gottes gelten. Ein Durchgang durch apol. 28-34 beleuchtet, wie raffiniert Tertullian sich des Wortfeldes „maiestas“ und der kategorischen Unterscheidung zwischen Gott und Mensch bedient, wie er damit die beiden maiestates einander im Detail zuordnet und welche Art der Ehrerbietung gegenüber dem Kaiser er damit begründet. |
