Description
Summary:Mount Atago, which rises just north-west of Kyoto, is famous for the pilgrim throngs that climb it every year on the night of July 31. The pilgrims worship the deity of the shrine on the mountain's summit. The author believes that the pilgrimage represents the final stage of the fusion that took place between Buddhism and the cult of the god of the mountain. The present study deals with the 2 most essential aspects of the cult: the history of the cult itself and the adepts who managed it, and the confraternities that were and are the centres of the popular cult.
