Σύνοψη:During his stay in Strassburg (from 1313 onwards) Meister Eckhart dedicated, probably at the instigation of the bishop of Strassburg, his treatise "Book of the divine consolation" (BgT) and his sermon "About the noble person" (VeM) to Agnes, a royal widow of Habsburg-hungarian descent. A reference can be found in BgT to the additional sermon VeM. The sermons of Eckhart deal with a, usually short word of holy Scripture, which is then interpreted in a continuously developing way. In VeM at least in two places insertions can be found which do not have any bearing upon the passage which is discussed (Luke 19,12). On the other hand, a development of a doctrine about "the birth of the Son in the womb and the heart of the heavenly Father" is missing, although BgT announced such a teaching. Moreover the reader stumbles over evident interruptions in the flow of thought, a change in "isotopies" (recurring concepts), the emergence of pieces written in the fashion of a school theology, difficult and not well ordered, in one paragraph the reigning pronoun "she" is confused with "he", etc. This is best explained, if one assumes, that E. has rewritten his sermon, possibly under pressure of his bishop, and that the parts with his exceptionable teaching about the birth of the Son in the heart of God were replaced by insertions of a different kind, for instance texts from a theology as it was taught in the schools. What is left to us, particularly in the second part, is a great hymn of praise about the union with God which is granted to a "noble person". This is a fundamental theme for mystics.
