An alternate interpretation and translation of the Hebrew text is proposed: The genitive construction הַר־הַ גָּדוֺל is to be rendered as “mountain of the great one,” referring to the temple mount as the abode of the high priest (הַכהֵֹּן הַָּ גדוֺל ). מִישׁוֺר is understood as “uprightness,” and in light of syntactically parallel constructions elsewhere in the Hebrew Bible (Gen 33,8; 2Sam 16,2; Ezek 37,18), the article proposes reading all of v.7a as a question: “What do you signify for uprightness before Zerubbabel, O mountain of the great one?” As such, Zech 4,7a assigns to Zerubbabel a primacy with respect to the quality of “uprightness,” which is a characteristic of the reign of Yhwh (Pss 45,6; 67,5) and of the Davidic king (Isa 11,4). | ||
