Resumo: | The present article offers a description and an analysis of the interpretation of Judg. 11:29-40, the dramatic story about a father who sacrificed his daughter as a burnt offering, in a dozen examples of children’s and family bibles and some other retellings. Most are dating from the 20th century and by Christian authors. Three are not denominationally conditioned. All represent a modern form of the genre “Rewritten Bible” and do away with the simplicity and “neutrality” found in the biblical story of Jephthah and his daughter turning it into a new story by reshaping and dramatising, by metamorphosing the protagonists and by other characteristics, proper to retelling. In the hands of the authors the story becomes the bearer of the theological ideas and moral views which they and their times espoused. |
