Description
Summary:Close reading of the extant text of Genesis 17 brings to light several so-called terminological patterns. For one thing, the linguistic links based on the noun ברית (covenant), the verb היה (to be), the noun זרע (seed; descendant), and the two verbs רבה (multiply), and פרה (grow; be fruitful), support the terminological unity of the MT of Genesis 17. So, too, through deliberately distributing the word עולם (eternity; ages; as of old), the verb קום (arise; establish), the noun דור (generation), the term זכר (male), and the verb נפל (fall [upon]; prostrate), the author of the extant text has closely connected the patriarchal stories with the preceding Urgeschichte.
