总结:According to an opinion widely held among scholars, Rashi adopted the essential attitude of the midrash towards biblical style, according to which any form of repetition or redundancy must be explained as signifying something rather than as a rhetoric feature. At the source of this view on Rashi lies the fact that in many cases he cites the midrash on a verse in which other commentators identified the semantic doubling principle, instead of offering his own interpretation of the verse's plain meaning. But, as a matter of fact, a thorough examination of the subject shows that Rashi in many cases uses the doubling principle as an interpretive tool in order to explain difficult words, a use that presupposes the high frequency of the phenomenon. Furthermore it can be shown that Rashi's basic attitude is not significantly distinct from that of other Northern French exegetes, such as Rashbam (his grandson) and R. Eliezer of Beaugency, but that there exists an essential difference between them and the commentators of the Spanish school of interpretation. While the Spaniards thought mainly in terms of doubled ideas, the French commentators saw the essence of semantic doubling in the Bible's use of synonyms.
