Resumo: | The article discusses the Duke Odo I of Burgundy who gave the monks of the New Monastery at Citeaux a vineyard at Meursault early in the twelfth century, which serves as the birth date of the French wine industry because of the important contributions made by the Cistercians to the industry. Also discussed is the Citeaux's second daughter house, Pontigny in which the scale of Pontigny's operation and the significant advances that the Cistercian abbey brought to modern winemaking. |
