Résumé: | Lumen Gentium 33 famously ascribes to lay people a full apostolic role in the mission of the Church. The present article argues that this implies that to be able to fulfil this role lay people have the right and the duty to be theologically educated. With a view to the early Church it observes that from the very beginning there was indeed a wide interest in theological education. However, as Irenaeus' polemic against the various theological teachings of his time indicates, popular interest in theology also brought tensions. Indeed there seems to be a conflict of interest on the part of Church leaders: Wider participation in theological reflection on the Church's teaching, desirable as it may be, also brings greater diversity and plurality in teaching, which many might see as a threat to cohesion and discipline resulting in a loss of authority for the hierarchy. The article concludes that while this tension may always persist, it could also be seen as a creative source from which new and timely ways of formulating and proclaiming the Church's teaching emerge. |
