The present article argues that this implies that to be able to fulfil this role lay people have the right and the duty to be theologically educated. With a view to the early Church it observes that from the very beginning there was indeed a wide interest in theological education. However, as Irenaeus' polemic against the various theological teachings of his time indicates, popular interest in theology also brought tensions. Indeed there seems to be a conflict of interest on the part of Church leaders: Wider participation in theological reflection on the Church's teaching, desirable as it may be, also brings greater diversity and plurality in teaching, which many might see as a threat to cohesion and discipline resulting in a loss of authority for the hierarchy. The article concludes that while this tension may always persist, it could also be seen as a creative source from which new and timely ways of formulating and proclaiming the Church's teaching emerge. | ||
