| Summary: | Right-wing populist attitudes aggressively target the Establishment and in particular all those whom they dismiss and exclude because of their origin, religion or sexual orientation. Such attitudes have penetrated deep into society and the churches. They deny the fundamental equality of all human beings, which is both a promise of modern democracies and the fundamental Christian conviction that all human beings are created in the image and likeness of God. In the face of the fear-filled visions of doom purveyed by right-wing populist attitudes, Christians and churches must bear witness to the potential of Christian hope, maintain it and demonstrate its truth by bridge-building as part of the activity of civil society. In so doing they perform the liturgical role of pontifex in everyday life (Rom 12.2). |
