Byblos is fairly well known as a major Levantine proto-urban and urban center because of the excavations that have revealed a part of the Chalcolithic village and of the Early Bronze Age town. But almost nothing is known about its territory during these periods. As part of a project carried-out by the Archaeological Department of the Ifpo, a 14 x 7 km area in the countryside of the ancient city of Byblos has been surveyed and 24 late prehistoric settlements have been identified. This study draws both on geographic information and on data about technology of the ceramic sample, in order to identify ancient operational sequences (ceramic chaînes opératoires) and compare their spatial-historical development with the location and the evolution of the 6th-3rd millennia settlements. This way, it has been possible to observe the implementation of a territorial network based on some precise and long-lasting organizational rules. |
