Σύνοψη: | Western monasteries in Late Antiquity are usually associated with unquestionably orthodoxy structures linked to prayer, the preservation and production of documents, and the colonization of marginal agricultural areas. In their description there is hardly any room for heterodoxy in a dogmatic sense; in these spaces of coexistence, doctrinal discipline is guaranteed by the submission to an abbot whose orthodoxy is subject to the criteria of the ecclesiastical hierarchy. However, in 7th century Spain, especially in the Northwestern end, new monastic ways disrupted the experiential traditions to such an extent that their practices were occasionally branded as heretical and schismatic by some contemporary sources.
