Description
Summary:This article is based on the question of the relevance of Hugo Rahner’s studies about the history of the Society of Jesus for present historiography. Already in the first years of his life as a Jesuit, Rahner had considerable knowledge of Ignatian sources. For the rest of his life he maintained this specific interest and, at the same time, tried to meet the methodological requirements of critical historiography. However, his main concern was to uncover the power effusing from the mystical experiences of Ignatius, especially when it comes to its importance in the formation of subsequent generations of Jesuits in their service in the church. Consequently, Rahner approached the historical sources with spiritual and theological questions. In the end, Hugo Rahner was primarily an Ignatian theologian.
