La modificación, derrumbamiento y construcción de los recintos religiosos que albergaron los sambenitos, así como el deterioro natural de los mismos, su aumento numérico y los problemas económicos del Tribunal del Santo Oficio de México provocaron que la exposición de aquellos paños infamantes se hiciera progresivamente restringida, al pasar de lugares visualmente privilegiados a otros más discretos e incluso a estar ausentes en determinados períodos. |
