| Summary: | Une série de textes grecs et latins atteste que l’Oronte a été navigable, principalement dans la région d’Antioche de Syrie à l’époque romaine et dans l’Antiquité tardive. Cet article les réunit pour la première fois et tient compte des autres sources disponibles, épigraphiques et archéologiques, afin de définir le rôle de l’Oronte dans l’économie de la Syrie du Nord. L’importance généralement accordée au trafic fluvial dans le grand commerce et dans le ravitaillement des armées doit être minimisée. Les bateaux qui naviguaient sur le fleuve semblent surtout avoir assuré l’approvisionnement des grands marchés urbains, celui d’Antioche de façon certaine, ceux d’Apamée et d’Épiphanie de manière beaucoup plus hypothétique, à une échelle essentiellement régionale. Le développement de la navigation dépendait de la segmentation du fleuve en paliers. Il résultait d’une politique volontariste, peut-être mise en œuvre par les souverains hellénistiques, puis poursuivie par les empereurs de Rome, mais encore adaptée aux besoins et aux capacités financières des cités antiques de la vallée de l’Oronte. A series of Greek and Latin texts show that the Orontes river was navigable, mainly in the region of Antioch in Syria during the Roman period and in Late Antiquity. This article gathers these documents for the first time, taking into account the other available data, epigraphic and archaeological, in order to define the role of the Orontes in the economy of Northern Syria. The importance generally given to river traffic in the long-distance trade and in the supply of the armies probably has to be minimized. The boats that sailed the river seem especially to have supplied large urban markets, that of Antioch for sure, those of Apamea and Epiphaneia much more hypothetically, and primarily at a regional scale. The development of navigation depended on the segmentation of the river in different levels. It was the result of a deliberate policy which was perhaps implemented by the Hellenistic rulers and continued by the emperors of Rome, but which was also adapted to the needs and financial capabilities of the ancient cities of the Orontes valley. ملخص: تشهد مجموعة من النصوص اليونانية واللاتينية أن العاصي كان صالحاً للملاحة وبشكل خاص في منطقة أنطاكية في سوريا خلال العصر الروماني والعصور القديمة اللاحقة. وهذه المقالة تجمعها هذه النصوص للمرة الأولى آخذة بين الاعتبار المصادر الأخرى الكتابية والأثرية المتوفرة، وذلك بهدف التعريف بدور نهر العاصي في اقتصاد المنطقة الشمالية من سوريا. ويجب بشكل عام عدم تضخيم الأهمية المعطاة للنقل النهري في حركة التجارة ونقل قوات الجيش. ويبدو أن القوارب التي كانت تسير في النهر قد ساهمت بشكل خاص في ضمان تموين أسواق المراكز العمرانية الكبرى على المستوى الإقليمي بشكل أساسي، كسوق أنطاكية بشكل مؤكد وسوق أفاميا وإيبيفانيا (حماة) بشكل افتراضي. ولقد اعتمد تطور الملاحة النهرية على تقسيم النهر إلى مستويات، ونتج عن ذلك سياسة تنظيمية، ساعد على وضعها الحكام الهلنستيون على الأغلب، ثم حذا حذوهم أباطرة روما، ولكنها كانت متوافقة مع الحاجات والقدرات المالية للمدن القديمة في وادي العاصي. |
