| Summary: | What happened to the idea of the Christian people, the populus christianus, after the reign of Charlemagne? What do different texts related to the Carolingian councils tell us about the role of this religious-political figure that represented the idea of the one empire uniting many different peoples? And what else do these texts tell us about the role of these councils concerning the Christian people during the ninth century? To answer these questions, this paper analyzes the use of the expression populus christianus mainly in the counciliar acts to understand the underlying semantics and its historical background. In this way, the paper seeks to contribute both to the history of political ideas and to the history of ecclesiastical councils. |
