Description
Summary:Reading the »signs of the time«, the Second Vatican Council has set a clear example for overcoming the »outlandishness« of the church. The church and its message should not be foreign anymore (cf. AG 21). However, in context with this »aggiornamento« cultural differences and the claims of faith were identified. While some understood »not being foreign anymore« as a task to leave behind outdated cultural and social forms of behavior, others interpreted this phrase as a call to mere adjustment and dissolution of the gospel. The article analyses this misunderstanding and shows that »aggiornamento« means facing the experience of the foreign and to assert the demands of the gospel without making the case for a cultural and social backwardness of the church.
