Description
Summary:After some terminological preliminaries about the description of people with a disability, the article stresses that we are dealing first and foremost with people, people who cope with their lives, their relationships, and their inclusion in society under the particular condition of their disability, and that society often does not support them in this, but instead puts obstacles in their way. The article interprets disability as giving particular visibility to vulnerability as the human condition and the need, shared by all human beings, for redemption. Even when the desire for cure and healing is intelligible, where in medical and therapeutic terms healing is unlikely, disabilities must be accepted. This leads to a critical deconstruction of ideas of health and perfection. Unrealistic expectations and utopian hopes must not be nurtured, but inclusion must be practised as a process for creating a society of solidarity as a "healing heterotopia".
