| Zusammenfassung: | The Author comments on this passage from the homily preached by Pope Francis in Piana di Sibari on 21st June 2014. After this, members of the Mafia are excommunicated. After a presentation of the canonical concept of excommunication latae sententiae, come the arguments for and against the establishment of an excommunication for Mafiosi. According to the Author, the Roman Pontiff has used the word excommunication not in the technical sense of the term, but intending excommunication to have a rhetorical sense, and the phrase "they are excommunicated" to have the pastoral meaning that Mafioso should convert to God. These papal words can be understood, however, as an invitation to establish particular legislation concerning the delict of belonging to the Mafia.
