| Summary: | Conflict pervades the Gospel of Matthew. From the perspective of the social sciences, there has been much discussion about conflict between the Matthean group and outsiders but relatively little about conflict within the Matthean group itself. After some attention to the terms in the above title, this study explores leadership roles in the Matthean group. On the basis of leadership designations, an analogy from Paul, and four social scientific models it argues that in the Matthean group there is a tension between an expressed, limited "egalitarian" leadership ideology and a developing social reality that is moving toward a hierarchical "corporate" structure. |
