Description
Summary:This paper investigates the topic of divine justice, which animates many pages of the Old Testament and, nevertheless, cannot be understood in an unambiguous conception or through the study of a single text. An analysis of The Song of Deborah reveals a number of aspects essential for addressing the subject: the necessity to rethink certain categories – especially history, myth, and revelation – that continuously turn up in the history of biblical and Christian interpretation, yet with different meanings and values. To understand the biblical text, therefore, the necessity becomes apparent to reposition it – where possible – in its historical and literary context and to claim not its chronological purpose, but that of the interpretation of the real in function of a certain understanding of divinity held by its authors. As a result, YHWH’s violence and war are never ends in themselves, but continuously refer to something else, that is to the world of the biblical authors. The interpretation of the song therefore consists in capsizing the perspective: not looking for the God who reveals himself, but trying to grasp the desires and the necessities of those who have narrated him in the biblical text.
