Sumario:This paper discusses the genderedness of alternative methods of healing both on the side of practitioners and clients. Through the discussion of the phenomenon of shama-nism in various parts of the world the author shows that for many women, becoming a shaman can mean a significant change, often an improvement and greater independence from their husbands or other male family members. The fact that shamanism is however a marginalized form of healing can also mean that women gain a more important role only on the margins of society. Through her study, the author also discusses the gender-bias of a large part of ethnographical field studies where the gender of the researcher has often pre-determined the outcome of the study.
