Wittgenstein asserts in the Tractatus that “whereof one cannot speak, thereof one must be silent”. Mysticism is among these subjects, situated beyond the limits of the thinkable. Several medieval philosophers wrote mystical and visionary works. This article intends to discuss Wittgenstein’s position in the light of the works of two of these philosophers, the Iranian Muslim Ibn Sina (Avicena) and the Spanish Jew Ibn Gabirol (Avicebron), who left, besides their strictly philosophical writings, some others in symbolic and imagetic language. |
